Abbas Zandi (Persian: عباس زندی) was a famous Iranian athlete. He was born on June 3, 1930, in Tehran, Iran. Abbas Zandi was a talented freestyle wrestler and a national champion. He also practiced Varzesh-e Bastani, which is a traditional Iranian sport. Later in his life, he became a wrestling coach.

Abbas Zandi competed in three different Olympic Games. These were the 1948 London Olympics, the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, and the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He passed away on October 30, 2017, at the age of 87.

Early Life and Wrestling Start

Abbas Zandi grew up in a neighborhood called Sang-e-laj in Tehran. When he was 14 years old, he joined the Babr Club. There, he began to learn wrestling. His coaches were Abdolhossein Feyli and Hassan Sa'dian. They helped him become a skilled wrestler.

Becoming a National Champion

By the age of 17, Abbas Zandi was already a part of the Iranian national wrestling team. This was a big achievement for someone so young. Just one year later, when he was 18, he earned a very special title. He became the Pahlevan of Iran. This title is given to the strongest and most honorable wrestler in Iran. It means he was considered a true hero in wrestling.

World Championship Gold

In 1954, Abbas Zandi competed in the World Wrestling Championships. This event was held in Tokyo, Japan. He showed great skill and strength. He won a gold medal in the 79 kg weight class. This made him a world champion.

Asian Games Success

Abbas Zandi also did very well in the Asian Games. In 1958, the Asian Games were also held in Tokyo. He competed in the +87 kg weight class. Again, he proved to be the best. He won another gold medal at this event.
