Abdellatif Kechiche (born 7 December 1960) is a famous film director, screenwriter, and actor. He was born in Tunis, Tunisia, and also has French citizenship.

Kechiche is known for making movies that feel very real. He often uses a naturalistic style. He has won many important awards for his films. One of his biggest achievements was winning the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for his movie Blue Is the Warmest Colour. His first movie as a director was La Faute à Voltaire in 2000.

Early Life

Abdellatif Kechiche was born in Tunis, Tunisia. When he was six years old, he moved to Nice, France, with his family. He loved theater from a young age. He took acting classes at the Antibes Conservatory.

He performed in many plays in France. In 1978, he acted in a play by Federico García Lorca. The next year, he performed in a play by Eduardo Manet. He also enjoyed directing plays. In 1981, he directed "The Architect" at the Avignon Festival.

Kechiche also started acting in films. His first movie role was in "Mint Tea". He played a young Algerian immigrant who moved to Paris. In 1987, he acted in "The Innocents". He starred alongside famous actors like Sandrine Bonnaire.

In 1992, he won the best male actor award at the Namur Festival. This was for his role in the film "Bezness". That same year, he met Ghalya Lacroix. She later worked with him on writing and editing his future films.

Many English-speaking audiences first saw him in the 2005 movie Sorry, Haters. He played a taxi driver named Ashade. This film was shown at major film festivals.

Career as a Director

In 2003, Abdellatif Kechiche wrote and directed Games of Love and Chance (L’Esquive). He used amateur actors and had a small budget. The movie was about high school students in Paris. They were rehearsing a play by Pierre de Marivaux for their French class.

This film was a big success. Critics praised it as one of the best French films of 2004. It won four awards at the César Awards in 2005. These included Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. Sara Forestier, one of the lead actresses, won an award for her role.

His next film was The Secret of the Grain (La Graine et le mulet) in 2006. This movie tells the story of a worker from North Africa. He wants to open a restaurant in Sete for his family. But he faces challenges from French rules.

Kechiche showed The Secret of the Grain at the Venice Film Festival. He won the Special Jury Prize there. The film also won the Louis Delluc Prize. It received César Awards for Best Film and Best Director.

In 2010, Kechiche directed Black Venus (Vénus Noire). This film was also shown at the Venice Film Festival. It tells the story of Sarah Baartman. She was a Khoikhoi woman from the early 1800s. She was displayed in Europe in a way that was not respectful. Critics generally liked the film.

His 2013 film Blue Is the Warmest Colour was very successful. It won the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The film also won the FIPRESCI Prize. The two main actresses, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, also shared the Palme d'Or award. Working on the film was challenging for some, but the actresses felt the artistic result was worth it.
