Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh (born February 13, 1958) is a politician and businessman from Libya. He is currently the prime minister of Libya. He leads the Government of National Unity, which is based in Tripoli. He became Prime Minister on February 15, 2021. He was chosen to lead the country until new elections could be held.
Early Life and Education
Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh was born in Misrata, a city in western Libya. This was on February 13, 1958. He has said that he earned a master's degree in civil engineering. He claimed to get this degree from the University of Toronto in 1992. However, the university has stated that this claim is not true. This information became public before the Libyan elections in 2021. It caused some discussion about his educational background. In Libya, candidates for certain roles need to have a university degree.
Business Career
Dbeibeh returned to Misrata when there was a lot of building happening. He gained the trust of the Libyan leader at the time, Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi appointed him to lead the Libyan Investment and Development Company (LIDCO). This was a large construction company. LIDCO was in charge of many big public building projects. These included building 1,000 homes in Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte. After Gaddafi's government ended in 2011, Dbeibeh faced scrutiny regarding his business dealings.
Dbeibeh also managed the Al-Ittihad Football Club. This is a well-known football team.
Political Career
In 2020, Dbeibeh started a political group called Libya al-Mustakbal (Libya Future) Movement. He is often seen as an independent politician. Dbeibeh ran for office alongside Mohamed al-Menfi, who became president, and Musa Al-Koni, who became vice president. His government is the first unified government in Libya since 2014.
Dbeibeh was chosen as the Prime Minister of Libya in February 2021. He was selected to lead a temporary government. His group received more votes than another group led by Aguila Saleh Issa and Fathi Bashagha. There were some claims that Dbeibeh tried to influence the voting process. However, the US ambassador denied trying to affect the election.
As part of the agreement, Dbeibeh had to choose a group of ministers. This group, called a cabinet, needed approval from the House of Representatives (HoR). This was to form the Government of National Unity.
Since February 10, 2022, Dbeibeh's position has been challenged. Another politician, Fathi Bashagha, was also chosen as prime minister by the Libyan House of Representatives. However, Dbeibeh has said he will only leave office after a national election. He faced a difficult situation on February 10, 2022. His car was shot at, but he was not hurt. The United Nations still recognizes Dbeibeh as the interim prime minister. In January 2024, Dbeibeh suggested bringing back the Libyan monarchy under Mohammed El Senussi. He saw this as a way to help bring stability to the country.
Personal Life
Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh is related to Ali Ibrahim Dabaiba. Ali Dabaiba was previously the mayor of Misrata. He also led LIDCO, the state-owned construction company, during the Gaddafi era.
