Abdul Hamid Muhammad Abdul Rahman al-Dbeibeh is a Libyan politician and businessman. He is the prime minister of Libya for the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli. He became prime minister on February 15, 2021. He was chosen through a special meeting called the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF).
Early Life and Learning
Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh was born in Misrata, a city in western Libya. He has a background in civil engineering. He has also been involved in business for many years.
His Work and Business
Dbeibeh worked in construction in Misrata. He became the head of a large construction company called the Libyan Investment and Development Company (LIDCO). This company was in charge of big building projects in Libya. He also managed the Al-Ittihad Football Club.
Leading Libya
In 2020, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh started a political group called Libya al-Mustakbal (Libya Future) Movement. He was chosen as the Prime Minister of Libya in February 2021. His government is the first unified government in Libya since 2014. This means it brought together different groups.
He was asked to choose a group of ministers for his government. This group is called a cabinet. The plan was for the House of Representatives (HoR) to approve his choices. This would create the Government of National Unity.
Since February 10, 2022, his position as prime minister has been challenged. Another person, Fathi Bashagha, was also chosen as prime minister by the Libyan House of Representatives. However, Dbeibeh has said he will only give up power after a national election. The United Nations still recognizes Dbeibeh as the temporary prime minister. In February 2022, Dbeibeh was unharmed after an attack on his car.
About His Life
Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh is related to Ali Ibrahim Dabaiba. Ali Ibrahim Dabaiba was previously the mayor of Misrata. He also led the state-owned construction company LIDCO during the time of Muammar Gaddafi.
