Occupation Whaler

Abel Douglass (1841–1908) was an American whaling captain. He was born in 1841 in Maine. His family had a long history of working on ships and at sea.

Career as a Whaler

In the 1860s, Abel Douglass teamed up with James Dawson. They started the Dawson and Douglass Whaling Company. This company hunted whales off the coast of British Columbia.

The first time non-Native whalers hunted in British Columbia was in 1868. That year, Dawson and Douglass caught eight whales from Saanich Inlet.

In 1869, Dawson and Douglass created Whaletown. This was a special station for whaling on Cortes Island. Later, their whaling work moved to a place now called Whaling Station Bay on Hornby Island. The Dawson and Douglass Company then joined with another company, Lipsett Whaling Company. They formed the British Columbia Whaling Company. However, this new company closed down in 1871.

Personal Life

Abel Douglass lived with Maria Mahoi. She was from Hawaii and also had First Nations family. They lived together on Saltspring Island and had seven children. Later, Maria Mahoi married George Fisher and moved to Russell Island.
