Abel González Chávez (born July 26, 1943 – died August 27, 2019) was a famous radio and television host from Colombia. For many years, from 1996 until his death in 2019, Abel hosted a popular daily radio show called Satélite on a station called Emisora Atlántico.

Early Life and Radio Dreams
Abel Antonio González Chávez was born in Barranquilla, Colombia. He went to Colón High School and finished in 1960. As a young man, he started working in media in Barranquilla.
First Steps in Radio
His father loved radio and was a singer. This made Abel interested in radio from a young age. In the 1950s, the radio scene in Barranquilla really inspired him.
He was encouraged by Marcos Pérez Caicedo to become a broadcaster. In 1964, he passed an exam in Bogotá and got his radio license. Some of his biggest influences were Marcos Pérez Caicedo, Gustavo Castillo, and Juan Illera Palacio.
Starting His Career
Abel's first job was as a disk jockey at Variedades radio station. Later, he worked at Radio Reloj. He was also a commercial announcer for Édgar Perea at Riomar radio station.
He worked as a copywriter and an Account Executive for Sonovista Advertising Co. He also wrote columns for the El Heraldo newspaper.
In 1971, Abel helped create a new radio station. It was called Panamericana de la Costa. This station broadcasted the Pan American Games from Cali to the Caribbean region of Colombia. He worked with other famous people like Édgar Perea and Fabio Poveda.
Becoming a Star
Towards the end of 1977, Abel moved to Bogotá. He started working at Punch Televisión. He was a commentator for the 1978 Soccer World Cup. This was also the year that color television began in Colombia.
Working in Different Cities
Abel worked as a commercial director for Caracol in Cali. He also hosted radio talk shows for Todelar in Barranquilla and Sutatenza in Bogotá.
TV Shows and Awards
In the early 1980s, he hosted a boxing program on national TV called "Suena la campana" (The Bell Rings). Later, in the late 1980s, he hosted "Sábados Espectaculares" (Spectacular Saturdays). This was a variety show on the regional channel, Telecaribe.
On this show, he became known as "The Man with the Hat." He even won the India Catalina Award for his work on the show. In 1988, he won the Postobón National Award. This was for his documentary called "Campeón a la colombiana, campeón a la americana." The documentary showed the differences between a Colombian boxing champion, Fidel Bassa, and an American champion, like Sugar Ray Leonard.
From 1984 to 1994, Abel hosted "La Verdad" (The Truth) radio program. This show was on Emisora Atlántico. In 1995, he hosted "Tempranito y de Mañana" (Early in the morning) on Barranquilla's Uniautónoma Estéreo.
Technology Pioneer
Abel González was a true innovator. He was one of the first to use Information Technology in journalism in Colombia.
Using Computers for Sports
In 1981, he started using computers to get soccer and baseball statistics. He used a program called dBase 3 for this. Around 1983, he began using the Internet. He used it to get Major League Baseball statistics for his work.
Online Presence
From 1995 to 1996, he was in charge of a sports website called Sport Colombia. From 1999 to 2000, he directed Satelitecaribe.com. His radio show, Satélite, was also broadcast live on the Internet. This allowed people from all over the world to listen.
Later Years
Abel González continued to host his popular Satélite radio show. It was on Emisora Atlántico and also streamed live online. In 2008, he started the Caribe Sano Foundation. This foundation helped people in the coastal region of Colombia.
