Abelardo Díaz Alfaro (born July 24, 1916 – died July 22, 1999) was a famous author from Puerto Rico. He became very well known across Latin America in the 1940s. His book Campo Alegre was even studied in schools around the world, including places like Austria, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, as well as all over the Americas.

Early Life and Family
Abelardo Díaz Alfaro was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Ponce. His father, Abelardo Díaz Morales, was a Baptist minister. His mother, Asunción Alfaro Pratts, was a teacher. Abelardo had several siblings: Abigail, Dalila, Miriam, Priscilla, Raquel, and Samuel.
He later returned to Caguas for university. There, he married Gladys Meaux. Together, they had three children: two daughters named Dalila and Nanette, and one son named Abelardo.
Education and Career
Díaz Alfaro earned a bachelor's degree in arts from the Instituto Politécnico de San Germán. This school is now known as Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico. He also became a social worker. He received special certificates in Spanish and Psychology.
Over his lifetime, many universities gave him honorary doctorates. These are special degrees given to people who have achieved great things.
His Stories and Their Meaning
Some of his short stories are very famous. Examples include "Peyo Mercé enseña inglés" and "Santa Cló va a la Cuchilla." These stories are found in his book Terrazo.
In these stories, Díaz Alfaro often showed a contrast between two groups. One group was the simple, uneducated farmers of Puerto Rico. The other group was the American culture, often shown through the required teaching of English in Puerto Rico.
His stories celebrated the local Puerto Rican culture. They showed that even if people were not formally educated, they could be brave and strong. Other writers, like Ana Lydia Vega, later used similar ideas in their own works.
International Recognition
After becoming famous, Abelardo Díaz Alfaro gave talks and presentations in many parts of Latin America. He spoke in places like Mexico and Venezuela. His books have been translated into many languages. These include English, Polish, Russian, German, French, Italian, and Czech. This shows how popular his stories became around the world.
