Watercourse Afon Goch

Aber Falls, known in Welsh as Rhaeadr Fawr (which means "big waterfall"), is a stunning natural wonder in Gwynedd, Wales. It's located about two miles (3 kilometers) south of the small village of Abergwyngregyn.

This impressive waterfall is created by the Afon Goch river. The water dramatically drops about 120 feet (37 meters) over a hard, rocky edge. This happens in the beautiful foothills of the Carneddau mountain range. Before reaching the main falls, two smaller streams, called tributaries, join together. After they merge, the river is known as Afon Rhaeadr Fawr. Once it passes the road bridge, called Bont Newydd (meaning "New Bridge"), it becomes the Afon Aber.

Just a short distance to the west, you can find another, smaller waterfall. It is known as Rhaeadr-bach or Rhaeadr Fach.

Journey Through Time: Ancient History Near the Falls

As you walk along the main path to Aber Falls, you might discover signs of ancient life. There are several small settlements from the Bronze Age. This was a time long ago when people used bronze to make tools and weapons.

You can see an excavated roundhouse, which was a type of home, and a smithy, where metal items were made. These sites are fenced off and have information plaques to tell you more. You might also spot standing stones and cairns, which are piles of stones often used as memorials or markers. Most of these historical sites are on the right side of the pathway.

The area around Aber Falls has been a popular spot for visitors for a very long time. People have enjoyed its beauty since the 18th and 19th centuries, a period known as the Romantic Period. Famous visitors, like the author Julius Rodenberg, explored this beautiful part of Snowdonia National Park in Wales.

Planning Your Visit: Facilities and Safety

Aber Falls is easy to reach on foot by following a clear path. For those arriving by car, there is parking available. You will also find toilets and picnic benches, perfect for enjoying a packed lunch. An information centre is located in the village of Abergwyngregyn, where you can learn more about the area.

Some visitors enjoy swimming in the pool at the bottom of the falls. However, the water is very cold, even in summer! It's important to be careful because the rocks around the pool can be very slippery. Always watch your step and be aware of your surroundings.

Exploring the North Wales Path

The North Wales Path is a long walking trail that stretches along the coast. It connects the towns of Prestatyn and Bangor. This path crosses a bridge right at the foot of Aber Falls. This bridge, along with a smaller one near Rhaeadr-bach to the west, was built in 1995.
