Early Life as a Princess
Abish Khatun was born in Shiraz around 1259 or 1260. Her father was Sa'd II, a ruler from the Salghurid family. Her mother was Turkan Khatun.
Sadly, Abish was put in prison by her father's cousin, Saljuqshah. He had taken over as ruler. Saljuqshah later started a rebellion against the powerful Ilkhanate empire. The Ilkhanate ruler, Hulagu Khan, sent an army to stop the rebellion. Saljuqshah was eventually captured and executed in 1264.
Becoming a Ruler
After Saljuqshah was removed, Hulagu Khan ordered that Abish Khatun become the new ruler of Fars, which included Shiraz. This was a big deal because it meant she was officially recognized as the leader.
Abish and her older sister were then taken to the Ilkhanate capital by their grandmother. This showed their connection to the powerful Mongol rulers.
Challenges During Her Reign
During Abish's time as ruler, there were some challenges. In 1265, a local religious leader started a revolt, but it was put down. Several Mongol officials were sent to oversee the province, but they often faced problems.
Things became more stable when Abaqa Khan appointed a new overseer named Angyanu. However, he was not popular with the people of Shiraz and was removed in 1271.
Marriage to a Prince
A new overseer, Suqunjaq Noyan, arranged for Abish Khatun to get married. She had been promised to Mengü Temür, a son of Hulagu Khan, back in 1261. They finally married in 1272. This was a very grand wedding with many gifts.
After her marriage, Abish lived with Mengü Temür's mother. This meant that Mengü Temür became the main ruler of Shiraz, even though Abish was still officially the Atabeg. Abish only returned to actively ruling Shiraz in 1284.
Return to Shiraz
When Abish returned to Shiraz in 1284, there was a big celebration. Coins were even made with her name on them for a month. She appointed a relative, Jalal ad-Din Arqan, as her chief minister.
However, during this time, there was a terrible famine in the Fars Province, and many people died. Abish also had disagreements with a new overseer, which led to his death. Because of these issues, the Ilkhanate leaders ordered that Abish be removed from her position.
Later Life and Death
After being removed from power, Abish Khatun stayed in Tabriz. She became ill and passed away about a year later, in 1285 or 1286. She was the last ruler of the Salghurids family.
Family
Abish Khatun was married to Mengü Temür, who was a son of Hulagu Khan. They had two daughters together: Kurdujin Khatun and Alghanchi.
