About Abra's Early Life
Abra was born in Queens, New York. Her parents were missionaries from Guyana and Haiti. She spent her first eight years in London. There, her parents built a church where they worked.
Abra started singing in that church. Her father was the pastor, and her mother led the music. After London, her family moved to Lilburn, a suburb near Atlanta.
When she was 14, Abra began playing the guitar. She went to Parkview Highschool. She was very active in the drama club and graduated in 2007.
Abra's Music Career
Later, as a teenager, Abra started uploading videos. She would sing acoustic versions of rap songs on YouTube. This is how Father, the founder of Awful Records, discovered her. He encouraged her to create her own original music.
She joined Awful Records in 2014. Abra said that her early experiences with the label really inspired her. She felt it gave her the push she needed.
Her first music collection, called an EP, was BLQ Velvet. It came out in 2015. Her second EP, Princess, was released in 2016 by True Panther Sounds. This was her first release with a major record label. A song called "Fruit" from her album Rose was even featured in an article by The Guardian as one of the best R&B songs of 2016.
Vogue magazine talked about Abra's unique style in 2016. They noted that she often uses strong contrasts in her look. This is also part of her artistic identity. Abra is one of the few women in the mostly male group Awful Records. This group is quickly changing the music scene in Atlanta.
Abra also acted in the 2018 movie Assassination Nation. She played the character Em. She later said that making the film was a lot of hard work. Even small scenes took a huge amount of effort. She compared it to "stomping on all these grapes to make a little [bottle] of wine."
In 2023, she released a new song called "FKA MESS". The Fader magazine described it as a "six-minute experimental pop journey."
Abra's Musical Style
Dazed magazine described Abra's early music. They said it often had "looming, bass-heavy production." This means the music had a strong, deep bass sound. Her songs also featured "hypnotically melodic and vulnerable lyricism." This means her lyrics were catchy and showed her feelings.
Her music often includes elements of trap music, electronic music, and rhythm and blues (R&B).
