Adnan Ismail Najm al-Bilawi Al-Dulaimi (Arabic: عدنان إسماعيل نجم البيلاوي الدليمي; born 1971 – died June 4, 2014) was a key military leader. He was also known by his war name, Abu Abdulrahman al-Bilawi al-Anbari. He served as the head of the Military Council for the Islamic State group. Iraqi forces killed him on June 4, 2014.
About Adnan al-Bilawi
Adnan al-Bilawi was part of the Al-bu Bali clan. This clan belongs to the Dulaim tribe. The Dulaim is the largest tribe in Iraq's Al Anbar Governorate. Members of this tribe were important in fighting against U.S. forces in Iraq. They also rejoined armed groups in 2014.
Al-Bilawi studied at the Iraqi Military Academy. He graduated in 1993. He became an infantry officer in the Iraqi military. He reached the rank of captain.
After the 2003 invasion of Iraq led by the U.S., al-Bilawi joined al-Qaida in Iraq. He worked closely with its leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. He was one of the people who helped start Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad. This group trained many fighters during that time.
Detention and Escape
American forces arrested Najm al-Bilawi in 2005. He was held at Camp Bucca. In July 2013, he escaped from Abu Ghraib prison. This happened during a large jailbreak by members of the Islamic State. About 500 prisoners escaped that day.
Role and Death
After his escape, al-Bilawi joined ISIL's Military Council. He played a big part in planning and leading the group's military actions. These actions took place in northern and central Iraq.
Iraqi security forces killed al-Bilawi on June 4, 2014. This happened during a raid in Mosul. After his death, a laptop belonging to him was found. It contained important information about ISIL's plans and leaders.
Al-Bilawi had been planning a military operation against Mosul. After he died, ISIL launched this attack. They took control of the city by June 9, 2014. The attack was named "Invasion of Asadullah al-Bilawi Abu Abdul Rahman" to honor him.
ISIL's spokesman, Abu Mohammad al-Adnani, confirmed his death. He praised al-Bilawi's work for the group. Abu Muhannad al-Suwaydawi reportedly took over his role.
