Abu Nasr Mansur (full name: Persian: أبو نصر منصور بن علی بن عراق; born around 960 – died 1036) was a very smart Persian Muslim mathematician and astronomer. He is well known for his important work with the spherical sine law. This law helps us understand angles and distances on a sphere, like the Earth.

Early Life and Education

Abu Nasr Mansur was born in a place called Gilan, which is in modern-day Iran. He came from a powerful family called the Afrighids, who ruled a region called Khwarezm. This meant he was a prince!

He was a student of another famous scholar, Abu'l-Wafa. Later, Abu Nasr Mansur became a teacher and a close friend to a very important mathematician named Al-Biruni. They worked together and made many amazing discoveries in math. They even dedicated their writings to each other.

Contributions to Science

Most of Abu Nasr Mansur's work was focused on mathematics. However, he also wrote some important books about astronomy.

Trigonometry Discoveries

In math, he made big contributions to trigonometry. This is a branch of math that studies the relationships between the sides and angles of triangles. His ideas built upon the work of ancient Greek thinkers like Ptolemy.

Abu Nasr Mansur also helped save the writings of another Greek mathematician, Menelaus of Alexandria. He carefully studied and improved many of the old Greek math ideas. His work helped future mathematicians understand and use these complex ideas.

Later Life and Legacy

Abu Nasr Mansur passed away in the Ghaznavid Empire. This area is now part of modern-day Afghanistan, near the city of Ghazni. His discoveries continue to be important in the fields of mathematics and astronomy even today.
