Acacia sabulosa is a type of shrub that belongs to the Acacia family. It's special because it only grows in certain parts of northwestern Australia. This means it is endemic to that area.

About the Plant

This bushy shrub often grows to be about 1 to 5 meters (3 to 16 feet) tall. It has a "V" shape and can spread out about 3 meters (10 feet) wide. It grows many stems from its base, with more branches forming higher up.

Its bark is smooth and dark grey when the plant is young. As it gets older, the bark at the bottom becomes cracked. The younger branches are thin and yellow to light brown, with bright green new shoots.

Like most Acacia plants, it doesn't have true leaves. Instead, it has phyllodes. These are flattened leaf stems that look and act like leaves. The phyllodes of Acacia sabulosa are soft, flexible, and thin. They are a dull green color and sometimes look a bit dusty. They are long and narrow, usually 4 to 10 centimeters (1.5 to 4 inches) long and 1 to 3.5 millimeters wide.

This plant blooms from May to July, producing pretty yellow flowers.

Where It Grows

Acacia sabulosa is found in specific areas of the Northern Territory and the Goldfields-Esperance and Pilbara regions of Western Australia.

It usually grows in sand dunes. These areas are very dry and have red-brown sandy soils. You can find it in places like the Eremaean Province and Northern Province.

Within the Pilbara region, it grows in different spots. You can see it along the coast between Port Hedland and Cossack, Western Australia. It also grows further inland near Marble Bar and Shay Gap, Western Australia.

Further north, it extends from around Mandora eastward into the Great Sandy Desert and the Little Sandy Desert. In the Northern Territory, it's found in the Tanami Desert. Here, it often grows among spinifex grasses.
