Achille Lauro (born June 16, 1887 – died November 15, 1982) was an important Italian businessman and politician. Many people see him as one of the first modern "populist" leaders in Italy. His supporters often called him Il Comandante, which means "The Commander."
Achille Lauro's Life Story
Achille Lauro was born in Piano di Sorrento, Italy. He was the fifth of six children. His father, Gioacchino, was a shipowner. Achille followed in his father's footsteps. He started his own shipping company called Flotta Lauro. This company became one of the biggest and most powerful fleets in Italy. It also made him very wealthy. Achille Lauro believed in sharing success with his workers. This idea helped his businesses grow strong.
A Popular Politician
Achille Lauro was also a very popular politician. He was especially loved by the people of Naples. In the local elections of 1952 and 1956, he received almost 300,000 votes. This was more votes than any other candidate had ever received in local elections before. In the national elections of 1953, he got 680,000 votes for the Chamber of Deputies. This was also a record number of votes at that time.
His Roles and Influence
During the time of Italian fascism, Achille Lauro was named a National Counsellor. This position was in the Chamber of Fasces and Corporations. He was appointed by Galeazzo Ciano, who was Benito Mussolini's son-in-law. Ciano was also involved in shipping. During this period, Lauro also became the president of the Naples football club, SSC Napoli. He took over from Giorgio Ascarelli.
After World War II, Achille Lauro joined the monarchist movement. This movement supported having a king or queen as the head of state. He helped financially to start the Monarchist National Party (PNM). For a long time, he served as the mayor of Naples. People admired him for his work, but some also questioned how he managed public money.
Today, a square in the coastal town of Sorrento is named in his honor.
