Acroaspis is a genus of orb-weaver spiders that live in the South Pacific region. These spiders were first described by a scientist named Ferdinand Karsch in 1878.

About Acroaspis Spiders

Acroaspis spiders are part of a larger group called orb-weavers. These spiders are famous for building beautiful, round, wheel-shaped webs. They use these webs to catch insects for food.

Where Acroaspis Spiders Live

You can find Acroaspis spiders mainly in Australia and New Zealand. Each type of Acroaspis spider might live in different parts of these countries. For example, some are found in New South Wales, while others are in Queensland or Western Australia.

What They Look Like

Many Acroaspis spiders have unique shapes. Some species, like the one shown in the picture, have bumps or small spikes on their bodies. This can help them blend in with their surroundings or make them look less appealing to predators.

Species of Acroaspis

As of 2019, there are six known species of Acroaspis spiders. Each species has its own scientific name and specific places where it has been found:

  • Acroaspis decorosa (Urquhart, 1894) – Found in New Zealand.
  • Acroaspis lancearia (Keyserling, 1887) – Found in Australia (New South Wales).
  • Acroaspis mamillana (Keyserling, 1887) – Found in Australia (New South Wales).
  • Acroaspis olorina Karsch, 1878 – Found in Australia (Western Australia, New South Wales).
  • Acroaspis scutifer (Keyserling, 1886) – Found in Australia (New South Wales).
  • Acroaspis tuberculifera Thorell, 1881 – Found in Australia (Queensland).
