What Happened at Elouges
This battle happened right after the Battle of Mons. The British Expeditionary Force (which was the main British army sent to Europe) was pulling back. They were being closely followed by the advancing German Army.
British Forces Involved
During this retreat, the British 5th Division was helped by two groups of cavalry. These were the 2nd Cavalry Brigade and the 3rd Cavalry Brigade. Cavalry are soldiers who fight on horseback.
Brave Charges and Heroes
During the fighting at Elouges, some very brave actions took place.
- The 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards and a group from the 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers charged directly at the German guns. This was a very dangerous move.
- Two soldiers were given the Victoria Cross for their bravery. This is the highest award for courage in the British military.
- Major Ernest Alexander from the Royal Artillery helped save some artillery guns while under heavy enemy fire.
- Captain Francis Grenfell of the 9th Lancers also helped save the guns. He showed incredible courage.
The End of the Battle
Even with these brave actions, the battle ended in a German victory. The 1st Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment was surrounded by German forces. Sadly, they were eventually defeated.
