Acuff is a small farming community in northeastern Lubbock County, Texas, United States. It is an unincorporated community, meaning it doesn't have its own local government like a city. In 2000, about 30 people lived there. Acuff is part of the larger Lubbock metropolitan area.

History
How Acuff Started
Acuff got its name from Michael S. Acuff. He is thought to have arrived in this area in February 1891. Other early families, like Thomas Acuff, L. O. Burford, and Jim Brown, also moved to the community.
Community Life and Growth
A post office served Acuff from 1903 to 1912. In the 1940s, people who followed the Baptist and Methodist faiths shared the same church building. By 1989, the Church of Christ was the main church in the area.
In the 1930s and early 1940s, about 25 people lived in Acuff. The population grew to 50 in the 1950s and 1960s. However, by 1990, the number of residents dropped to 30. It stayed around 30 until 2000. Acuff is also located near the Lubbock International Dragway, a place for car racing.
Tornadoes in Acuff
On April 16, 2009, a weak tornado (called an F0) hit Acuff. It stayed in open fields and did not cause any damage. A few hours later, another slightly stronger tornado (an EF1) struck the community. This second tornado destroyed a barn that was not built very strongly. It also caused minor damage to a business nearby.

Where is Acuff?
Acuff is located where two roads, Farm to Market Road 40 and Farm to Market Road 789, meet. It is about 10 miles (16 km) east of the city of Lubbock. This area is in the east-central part of Lubbock County.
Education
Schools in Acuff
The first school in Acuff was built in 1902. It was a wooden building. The materials for its construction had to be brought in from faraway places like Big Spring or Amarillo.
In 1924, a new, larger school with six brick rooms was built. The next year, Acuff became its own independent school system. However, by 1947, Acuff's school joined the Roosevelt Independent School District. By 1942, children from Acuff were already attending schools in the Roosevelt district.
Notable people
- The Maines Brothers Band has connections to the Acuff area. Two famous members of this band are Lloyd Maines and his daughter, Natalie Maines. Natalie Maines is well-known as a singer for the band the Dixie Chicks.
