Adèle Daphne Geras (born 15 March 1944) is an English writer. She creates books for young children, teenagers, and adults.

Adèle Geras's Early Life

Adèle Geras was born in Jerusalem. At that time, it was known as British Mandatory Palestine. Her parents were British Jewish. Her father worked for the government in different countries. This meant Adèle had a very interesting childhood. She lived in many places around the world. These included countries like Nigeria, Cyprus, and Tanganyika. Tanganyika is now part of Tanzania. She also lived in Gambia and British North Borneo.

Adèle went to Roedean School in Brighton, England. Later, she studied at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She earned a degree in Modern Languages. Adèle was known for her acting and singing skills. However, she decided to become a full-time writer instead.

Adèle Geras's Books and Writing

Adèle Geras's first book was Tea at Mrs Manderby's. It was published in 1976. Her first full-length novel was The Girls in the Velvet Frame. She has written over 95 books. These books are for children, young adults, and grown-ups.

Some of her well-known books include Troy and Ithaka. Troy was chosen for the Whitbread Prize. It also received high praise for the Carnegie Medal. Other popular titles are Happy Ever After and Silent Snow, Secret Snow. She also wrote A Thousand Yards of Sea.

For adults, her novels include Facing the Light and Hester's Story. She also wrote Made in Heaven and A Hidden Life.

In December 2016, Adèle Geras appeared on TV. She was part of the team from St Hilda's College Oxford. They competed in the Christmas Special of University Challenge on BBC Two.

Awards and Recognition

Adèle Geras has won several awards for her writing. In the United States, she won two important prizes. She received the Sydney Taylor Book Award for her book My Grandmother's Stories. She also won the National Jewish Book Award for Golden Windows.

She has also won awards for her poetry. She was a joint winner of the Smith Doorstop Poetry Pamphlet Award. This award is given by the publisher Smith Doorstop.

Adèle Geras's Family Life

Adèle Geras was married to Norman Geras. He was a university professor. They had two daughters together. One daughter is Sophie Hannah, who is also a novelist and poet. Their other daughter, Jenny, works for Macmillan Publishers.
