Adèle Geras is a British writer. She writes books for young children, teenagers, and adults. She was born on March 15, 1944.

A Childhood of Travel
Adèle Geras was born in Jerusalem. Her parents were British. Her father worked for the government. Because of his job, Adèle lived in many different countries.
She grew up in places like Nigeria, Cyprus, and Tanzania. She also lived in Gambia and British North Borneo. This meant she had a very interesting childhood.
Adèle went to Roedean School in Brighton, England. Later, she studied Modern Languages at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She was good at acting and singing. But she chose to become a full-time writer instead.
Her Books and Stories
Adèle Geras published her first book in 1976. It was called Tea at Mrs Manderby's. Her first full novel was The Girls in the Velvet Frame.
She has written over 95 books. These books are for children, young adults, and grown-ups. Some of her well-known books include:
- Troy – This book was nominated for the Whitbread Prize. It also received high praise for the Carnegie Medal.
- Ithaka
- Happy Ever After
- Silent Snow, Secret Snow
- A Thousand Yards of Sea
Adèle Geras has also written novels for adults. These include Facing the Light and Hester's Story. Other adult novels are Made in Heaven and A Hidden Life.
In December 2020, Adèle Geras appeared on TV. She was part of the St Hilda's College Oxford team. They competed on the BBC Two show University Challenge.
Awards and Recognition
Adèle Geras has won several awards for her writing. She won two prizes in the United States:
- The Sydney Taylor Book Award for My Grandmother's Stories.
- The National Jewish Book Award for Golden Windows.
She has also won awards for her poetry. She was a joint winner of the Smith Doorstop Poetry Pamphlet Award. In 2014, she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. This is a special honor for writers.
Her Family Life
Adèle Geras was married to Norman Geras. He was a university professor. They had two daughters together.
One of their daughters is Sophie Hannah. Sophie is also a well-known novelist and poet. Their other daughter, Jenny, works in publishing.
