Ada is a small township in Dickey County, North Dakota, United States. A township is like a small local area or district. In 2020, only 29 people lived there. This was fewer than the 60 people who lived there in 2000. A long time ago, in 1900, Ada Township had 232 residents.

A Look Back at Ada Township

Ada Township began to be settled in the early 1880s. It was first part of a larger area called Weston Township. Weston Township covered two "survey townships." These are square areas of land used for mapping.

Around 1900, Ada was officially created from the southern part of Weston Township. The northern part was then renamed Kent Township.

The Village of Silverleaf

The village of Silverleaf was built in 1887. It is located about 7 miles east of Ellendale. Silverleaf used to be the main place where people lived in Ada Township.

In the late 1910s, about 25 people lived in Silverleaf. It never seemed to have more than 50 residents. Today, it is mostly an empty place, sometimes called a ghost town.

Silverleaf was a stop for the Great Northern Railroad. Trains would stop there to pick up or drop off goods.

How Silverleaf Got Its Name

There are two different stories about how Silverleaf got its name. Some people say it was named after the silverberry bushes that grew in the area. These bushes have silvery leaves.

Other people say the name came from a joke. An early settler named Dan Keenan reportedly took the label from a tin of "Silverleaf" lard. Lard is a type of cooking fat. He then nailed the label to a boxcar (a type of train car) that was parked at the station.
