Local stories say that a preacher once strongly declared, "I am adamant that we change the name of this town!" To be "adamant" means to be very firm and determined about something. In 1905, the people living there asked the state government to officially change the name to "Adamant."

The granite quarries were very important to Adamant's economy for a long time, lasting until the middle of the 20th century. Even today, Adamant is a small, rural village. It doesn't have paved roads or traffic lights, which adds to its peaceful, old-fashioned feel.
The Adamant Co-op
The heart of the village is the Adamant Co-op. This is a special kind of general store and post office that is owned by its members, usually people who live in the community. It's located where several roads meet: Haggett, Quarry, Center, and Sodom Pond Roads. The Adamant Co-op was started in 1935, making it the oldest co-operative store in Vermont.

Adamant Music School
