Adamson University (Filipino: Pamantasang Adamson), often called AdU, is a private Catholic university in Manila, Philippines. It is run by the Congregation of the Mission, a group of priests and brothers. The university offers many different programs, from grade school and high school to college degrees in areas like engineering, nursing, and business. It's one of the top universities in the Philippines.

Adamson University is known for its strong academic programs. It has been ranked among the best universities in Asia by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a well-known global university ranking system. In 2024, it even climbed into the top 5 universities in the Philippines! The university is also a proud member of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), where its teams compete in various sports. In 2017, the university's cheerdancing team won first place in the UAAP competition.

How Adamson University Started

Adamson University was founded by George Lucas Adamson, a chemist from Greece. On June 20, 1932, he opened the Adamson School of Industrial Chemistry. It started as just one classroom!

His cousin, Alexander Athos Adamson, came to the Philippines in 1932 to help manage the new school. Alexander handled important roles like vice president and treasurer. Two years later, Alexander's brother, George Athos Adamson, also joined as a professor and dean.

In 1936, the school's name changed to the Adamson School of Industrial Chemistry and Engineering. George Lucas's wife, Evdoxia Savaides Adamson, also started working there in 1939. She became a professor and dean of the Colleges of Education and Liberal Arts. The school officially became a university on February 5, 1941.

Important Moments in History

After World War II, the Adamson family continued to work at the university, except for George Athos and Sofia, who left the country. George Lucas Adamson served as the university's president for 35 years!

In 1952, Adamson University joined the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) as a trial member, becoming a full member in 1971. On December 4, 1964, the university was given to the Congregation of the Mission. Its special patron saint is Saint Vincent de Paul.

Over the years, several important leaders have guided the university. Spanish priest Leandro I. Montañana became the second president. Later, Fr. Rolando S. Dela Goza became the first Filipino president.

In 2007, the university celebrated its 75th anniversary, known as its diamond jubilee. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines even recognized the university as a historical site. A special monument was placed in front of the St. Vincent Building, which is the oldest building on campus.

In 2010, the Commission on Higher Education gave Adamson University "autonomous status." This means the university has more freedom to manage its own programs and operations.

A museum dedicated to the university's founders was opened in the St. Vincent Building on November 16, 2012. This was part of the celebration for its 80th anniversary. In 2013, the university also received an important quality certification, ISO 9001:2008, from TÜV Rheinland.

Fr. Marcelo V. Manimtim became the sixth president in 2015. Recently, on December 13, 2023, Fr. Daniel Franklin E. Pilario became the seventh president of Adamson University. He is also the third alumnus (former student) to become president.

Adamson University's main campus is located on San Marcelino Street in Ermita, Manila. This area is often called the "University Belt" because many schools are close by. Nearby universities include the Technological University of the Philippines and Philippine Normal University. The Adamson campus has eight buildings and covers about 10.7 hectares of land.

Before settling in its current spot in 1946, the school was located in three different places: Santa Cruz (1932–1933), San Miguel (1933–1939), and Intramuros (1939-1941). The university has grown its campus over the years by buying nearby properties.

Saint Vincent Seminary Campus

Adamson University also has a Graduate School of Theology called St. Vincent School of Theology. It offers advanced degrees in theology and philosophy. This campus is located inside the Sanctuario de San Vicente de Paul in Tandang Sora, Quezon City.
