Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo (born February 16, 2000) is a famous Filipino artistic gymnast. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist from the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He won gold in both the floor exercise and vault events.
Carlos made history as the first Filipino and first male Southeast Asian gymnast to win a medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. He earned a bronze medal in the floor exercise in 2018. The next year, in 2019, he became the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win a gold medal at the World Championships in the same event.
With many medals from international competitions, Carlos Yulo is a true sports hero. He is the second person from the Philippines to win an Olympic gold medal. Even more amazing, he is the first Filipino to win multiple Olympic gold medals. He is also the first Southeast Asian athlete to win more than one gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Carlos is known for being shorter than many other male gymnasts. He is also famous for his perfect form and how difficult his routines are. His best events are the floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars.

Carlos Yulo's Early Life and Education
Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo was born on February 16, 2000, in Manila, Philippines. His parents are Mark Andrew Yulo and Angelica Yulo. He grew up in Malate, Manila. Carlos is the second of four children. His younger siblings, Karl Jahrel Eldrew and Elaiza Andriel, are also gymnasts.
Carlos started gymnastics when he was seven years old. His grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, saw him tumbling at a local playground. He then took Carlos to the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) for training. Carlos also trained at Club Gymnastica in Pasig when he was younger.
He went to Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School in Malate. There, his teacher-coach Ezra Canlas trained him for the Palarong Pambansa (Philippine National Games). He was part of the National Capital Region's gymnastics team. With help from GAP, he went to Adamson University for high school.
In 2016, Carlos got a scholarship from the Japan Olympic Association. This allowed him to train in Japan. After moving, he continued his studies at Teikyo University in Itabashi, Tokyo. He graduated in 2022 with a degree in literature.
Carlos Yulo's Gymnastics Journey
Carlos Yulo started competing in 2008. His first Palarong Pambansa was in 2009 in Tacloban, Leyte. He helped his team win a gold medal. He also won a silver medal in the floor exercise. These early wins made him want to train even harder.
In 2010, Carlos competed in the Palarong Pambansa again. He won gold in the individual all-around and floor exercise. He also got a bronze medal in the vault. The next year, he won more gold medals in the team event, all-around, floor exercise, and vault. He also won three gold medals at the 2011 Philippine National Games.
In 2012, Carlos won more gold medals at the Palarong Pambansa. He won in the all-around, floor exercise, vault, and team competition. That same year, he trained in China. This training was to help him qualify for the 2014 Youth Olympics.
Carlos competed in his last Palarong Pambansa in 2013. He won gold medals in the team event, all-around, and floor exercise. He also got a silver in the vault. In 2013, he met Munehiro Kugimiya, who would later become his coach.
Junior Competitions and Success
As a junior gymnast, Carlos was coached by Aldrin Castañeda. He won gold medals in the floor exercise and parallel bars at the 2014 ASEAN School Games. He also competed at the 2014 Pacific Rim Championships. In 2015, he won a bronze medal in the vault in Japan.
In 2016, Munehiro Kugimiya became Carlos's coach. Carlos also started getting financial help for his career. He won five medals at the 2016 Pacific Rim Championships. This included gold medals on floor exercise and vault. Even with an ankle injury in 2017, he won a gold medal in the parallel bars at the Junior Asian Championships.
Senior Career and World Recognition
Carlos Yulo started his senior international career in 2018. He quickly won bronze and silver medals at World Cup events. At the 2018 Philippine National Games, he won every individual gold medal. At the 2018 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha, he made history. He became the first Filipino gymnast to reach a World Championships final. He won a bronze medal in the floor exercise. This made him the first Filipino and first male Southeast Asian gymnast to win a medal at the World Championships.
In 2019, Carlos continued his success. He won a gold medal in the floor exercise at the Melbourne World Cup. At the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, he qualified for the all-around final. This also meant he qualified to compete for the Philippines at the Gymnastics at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In the floor exercise final, he won the gold medal. This made him the first Filipino and Southeast Asian world champion in artistic gymnastics. After this, he competed at the Southeast Asian Games. He won gold in the all-around and floor exercise, plus many silver medals.
Olympic Dreams and World Medals
The COVID-19 pandemic affected many competitions in 2020. Carlos still won bronze medals in vault and floor exercise at Japanese championships.
In 2021, Carlos represented the Philippines at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He hoped to win the country's first Olympic gold. He qualified for the vault final and finished in fourth place. After the Olympics, he competed at the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan. He won a gold medal in the vault final and a silver medal in the parallel bars final.
In 2022, Carlos led the Filipino team to a silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games. He also won the gold medal in the all-around. In the event finals, he won gold in the floor exercise, still rings, vault, and horizontal bar. He also won his first senior Asian Championships title in Doha. He won gold medals in the floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars. At the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool, he won a silver medal in the vault and a bronze medal in the parallel bars.
In 2023, Carlos won more medals at World Cup events. He won gold in floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars. At the Southeast Asian Games, he helped his team win silver. He also defended his all-around title and won gold in parallel bars. At the 2023 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships, he won a silver medal in the all-around. He also won three gold medals in the event finals. Carlos qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics through his performance at the World Championships.
Becoming an Olympic Champion
In 2024, Carlos trained with new coaches. He won a bronze medal at the Baku World Cup and gold and silver medals at the Doha World Cup. He won his first Asian Championships all-around title in Tashkent. He also won three more gold medals there in floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars.
At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, Carlos qualified for the all-around, vault, and floor finals. On August 3, he competed in the men's floor exercise final. He placed first and won the gold medal! This made him the first Filipino man and first Filipino gymnast to win an Olympic gold. He was also the second Filipino ever to win an Olympic gold, after Hidilyn Diaz. The very next day, Carlos won his second gold medal at the Games in the vault event. He became the Philippines' first-ever multiple-time Olympic champion.
After his amazing Olympic wins, the government and other groups promised Carlos many rewards. Carlos announced he would take a break from competitions for the rest of the year. The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines plans to find a foreign coach for Carlos and other gymnasts. Their goal is to send a gymnastics team to the 2028 Summer Olympics. In October 2024, it was decided that Aldrin Castañeda would remain Carlos's personal coach.
Carlos Yulo's Personal Life
Carlos Yulo has been in a long-distance relationship with Chloe Anjeleigh San Jose since 2020. She is a student and content creator in Australia.
In October 2024, Carlos Yulo joined the Philippine Navy as a reservist. He was given the rank of Petty Officer First Class.
