Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo (born February 16, 2000) is a famous Filipino artistic gymnast. He is known for winning two gold medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. He won gold in both the floor exercise and vault events.

Carlos Yulo made history as the first Filipino male gymnast to win a medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. He earned a bronze medal in the floor exercise in 2018. The next year, in 2019, he became the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win a gold medal at the World Championships in the same event.

With many international medals, Yulo is the second person from the Philippines to win an Olympic gold medal. He is also the first athlete from Southeast Asia to win more than one gold medal at the Olympic Games. He has won two Olympic golds, six World Championship medals (two golds, two silvers, two bronzes), eleven Asian Championship golds, and nine SEA Games golds. Carlos is admired for his precise movements and difficult routines, especially on the floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars.

Early Life and Training

Carlos Yulo was born on February 16, 2000, in Manila, Philippines. His parents are Mark Andrew and Angelica Yulo. He is the second of four children. His younger siblings, Eldrew and Elaiza, are also gymnasts.

Carlos grew up watching gymnasts practice at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Malate. He started gymnastics training when he was seven years old. His grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, saw him tumbling and took him to the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP).

He went to Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School and later to Adamson University for high school. In 2016, Carlos received a scholarship from the Japan Olympic Association. This allowed him to move to Japan and train there. He continued his studies at Teikyo University in Tokyo, graduating in 2022.

Gymnastics Career Highlights

Carlos Yulo started competing in 2008. He joined his first Palarong Pambansa (Philippine National Games) in 2009. He won a silver medal in the floor exercise, which motivated him to train even harder.

Junior Competitions

As a junior gymnast, Carlos was coached by Aldrin Castañeda. In 2014, he won gold medals in the floor exercise and parallel bars at the ASEAN School Games. He also won a bronze medal in the vault at a competition in Japan in 2015.

In 2016, Munehiro Kugimiya became Carlos's coach. Carlos also received a scholarship from the International Gymnastics Federation to help him train in Japan. He won five medals at the 2016 Pacific Rim Championships, including gold in floor exercise and vault. Even with an ankle injury in 2017, he won a gold medal in the parallel bars at the Junior Asian Championships.

Senior International Debut

At the 2018 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Doha, he made history. He became the first Filipino gymnast to reach a World Championships final. He then won a bronze medal in the floor exercise, making him the first Filipino and first male Southeast Asian gymnast to win a medal at this event.

After the Olympics, he competed at the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Japan. He won a gold medal in the vault and a silver medal in the parallel bars.

In 2022, at the Southeast Asian Games, Carlos helped the Filipino team win a silver medal. He also won gold medals in the all-around, floor exercise, still rings, vault, and horizontal bar. Later that year, he won his first senior Asian Championships titles in floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars. In 2023, Carlos continued to win medals at World Cup events. He defended his all-around title at the Southeast Asian Games. At the 2023 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships, he won three gold medals in floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars. He also won a silver in the all-around and a bronze in horizontal bar. After his amazing Olympic wins, the Philippine government and other groups promised Carlos many rewards, including homes. Carlos announced he would take a break from competitions for the rest of 2024. In October 2024, it was confirmed that Aldrin Castañeda would remain his personal coach.
