Addison is a small town located in Steuben County, New York. In 2020, about 2,397 people lived here. The town was named after a famous writer, Joseph Addison. There's also a village inside the town that shares the same name, Addison.

History of Addison
The first person to settle in the area was Samuel Rice in 1791. At first, Addison was part of an older town called Painted Post. In March 1796, when Steuben County was created, Addison became its own town and was called Middletown.
On April 6, 1808, the name was changed to Addison. This was done to honor Joseph Addison, a well-known English writer. Early settlers sometimes called the area Tuscarora. A school called Addison Academy opened its doors in 1840. By 1890, the town had a population of 2,884 people.
Geography of Addison
Addison covers about 25.7 square miles (66.5 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 25.6 square miles (66.4 square kilometers), is land. Only a very small part, about 0.04 square miles (0.1 square kilometers), is water.
Roads and Rivers
A main road, County Road 119, runs east to west through the town. This road used to be called NY Route 432. Another important road, NY Route 417, goes through the southeastern part of Addison. This road was once known as NY Route 17.
The Canisteo River flows through the southern part of the town. A smaller stream called Goodhue Creek also flows into this river near the eastern border of Addison.
Railroads
Addison is located on a major railway line called the Southern Tier Main Line. This line is now operated by Norfolk Southern Railway. It was first opened in 1850. For many years, from around 1885 to 1961, Addison was also the northern end point for other railway lines. These lines connected Addison to places like Galeton, Pennsylvania.

Addison experiences a range of temperatures throughout the year. The warmest month is usually July, with average high temperatures around 82 degrees Fahrenheit (27.8 degrees Celsius). The coldest month is January, where average low temperatures can drop to about 13.8 degrees Fahrenheit (-10.1 degrees Celsius).
The town gets a good amount of rain throughout the year, with July often being the wettest month. Snowfall is common in winter, especially from December to March.
