Adger's Past: A Mining Story

Adger is named after Andrew M. Adger. He was from Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. Adger moved to Bessemer, Alabama. He invested in the Bessemer Land & Improvement Company. He also helped run the Debardeleben Coal & Iron Company.

Adger started as a rural community in the late 1880s. This was when the Debardeleben company developed mines. These mines were called Adger, Johns, and Belle Sumter. They were in the Blue Creek Coal Basin. The mines were busiest in the early 1900s. The Black Diamond Mine also operated nearby. Its main buildings were close to the Old Blue Creek Baptist Church.

After the mines closed, Adger's population changed. It saw times of growth and decline. As of 2013, the old mine sites are being strip mined. This is done by Drummond Company's Twin Pines Mining Company. Only a few old concrete foundations remain from the original mines.
