A Look Back: Adin's History
Adin was the first town to be settled in Modoc County, west of the Warner Mountains. It was founded in 1869 by a man named Adin McDowell. The town was named after him in 1870. It started as a place to get supplies for the mining town of Hayden, which was in northern Lassen County.
The first post office in Adin opened in 1871 and was called Aidenville. Its name changed to Adin in 1876. In 1913, a book described Adin as having 200 people. It was seen as the main town in the Big Valley. In the mid-1930s, Adin became a sawmill town when the Edgerton Brothers Mill moved there from the Adin Mountains.
The town faced big fires in 1904, 1915, 1931, and 1939. After the 1939 fire, the people of Adin decided to create a volunteer fire brigade to help protect their town.
