History of Adler Township
How Adler Got Started
Adler Township began around 1882. A man named Charles Adler and four friends bought land there. They wanted to create a new settlement. They planned to name this new place "Adler." It was meant to be halfway between the towns of Petersburg and McVille. The name "Adler" comes from a German word meaning "eagle."
Early Days and Big Hopes
In May 1882, a post office opened in Adler. Mr. Adler himself became the first postmaster. Soon after, a tavern and a hotel were built. The small town of Adler quickly grew to about 30 residents. Mr. Adler had big plans for the future. He believed the town would keep growing. This was because it was located along the planned route for the Great Northern Railroad. He even said they would start many new farms. He also promised to build a great schoolhouse.
When the Railroad Changed Plans
However, things changed in the fall of 1882. The railroad officials decided to build their tracks in a different spot. They moved the route about 5 miles (8 km) to the north. Because of this, fewer people wanted to settle in Adler. The town's growth slowed down. The post office in Adler eventually closed in 1905.
Growth of the Township
Even though the town of Adler didn't grow as planned, the surrounding township still attracted people. In the early 1900s, more settlers moved to the area. The population of Adler Township grew from 77 people in 1890. It reached its highest population of 305 people in 1910.
