Administrative divisions of Croatia facts for kids
Croatia, a country in Europe, is divided into different parts to help manage it better. Think of it like how your country might have states, provinces, or regions. These parts are called administrative divisions.
On the biggest level, Croatia has 20 areas called counties (županije). There's also one special area, the city of Zagreb, which acts like its own county.
Inside these counties, there are smaller parts: municipalities (općine) and cities (gradovi). Both of these can have one or more settlements (naselja), which are like small towns or villages. These settlements aren't official government units on their own, but they are where people live. In bigger cities or municipalities, settlements might form local areas with their own councils, like gradski kotari or mjesni odbori. Smaller municipalities usually have just one main settlement.
Croatia's Main Divisions
Croatia has these main administrative divisions:
- Counties (21 total, including the City of Zagreb)
- Cities and Municipalities (556 total)
- City districts and Local committee areas (these are smaller local groups within cities or municipalities)
- Settlements (6,749 total, these are the individual villages and towns)
