Adolfo's catfish (Corydoras adolfoi) is a small, peaceful tropical freshwater fish. It belongs to a group of fish called armored catfish. These fish are known for their tough, bony plates. Adolfo's catfish comes from rivers in South America. You can find it in the Rio Negro basin and the Rio Uapes in Brazil. It is also called Adolfo's corydoras.

This fish looks a bit like another type of catfish, C. imitator. However, Adolfo's catfish has a shorter snout. It also has a special red color in front of its dorsal fin. The dorsal fin is the fin on its back.

About Adolfo's Catfish

Adolfo's catfish can grow up to about 2.2 inches (5.7 centimeters) long. That's about the length of your pinky finger.

What They Eat

These fish are bottom feeders. This means they look for food near the bottom of rivers. They eat different things like worms and small crustaceans. They also munch on insects and tiny bits of plant matter.

Where They Live

In the wild, Adolfo's catfish live in warm water. The water temperature is usually around 78°F (25.5°C). The water is also a bit acidic. It has a very low pH, usually between 5.3 and 5.4. The water also has very low conductivity. This means it has very few dissolved salts.

Breeding Adolfo's Catfish

Breeding Adolfo's catfish in an aquarium can be a bit tricky. The fish lay their eggs in open water. They lay one or two large, sticky eggs at a time. These eggs usually stick to a plant or a stone.

Adult fish do not guard their eggs. A female fish lays only a few dozen eggs at a time. The eggs hatch after about four days if the water is around 26°C (79°F). The baby fish, called fry, start eating after another four days.

Etymology

The fish is named after a person named Adolfo Schwartz. He was a collector of aquarium fish. He also exported them to other countries.
