Early Life and Education
Adolfo Alejandro Nouel was born in Santo Domingo. His father, Carlos Rafael Nouel y Pierret, was a diplomat, law teacher, and journalist. His mother was Clemencia Antonia Bobadilla y Desmier D'Olbreuse. His grandfather was Tomás Bobadilla y Briones, who was the first ruler of the Dominican Republic.
Adolfo Nouel started his schooling in Santo Domingo. He then went to the Seminary of the Dominican Capital. Before studying abroad, he was a student of Archbishop Fernando Arturo de Meriño.
He traveled to Italy and studied at the Colegio Latin Pio for ten years. He was a very bright student there. In 1883, he earned a doctorate in philosophy and bachelor's degrees in theology and canon law from the Gregorian University. In 1885, he returned to Santo Domingo with Monsignor Meriño. He became a priest in the Cathedral of Santo Domingo.
Becoming a Priest
In 1888, Adolfo Nouel became a parish priest in San Juan de la Maguana. Two years later, in 1890, he became the parish priest of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. He also became the vice-chancellor of the Conciliar Seminary of Santo Tomas de Aquino. At this seminary, he taught subjects like Philosophy, Latin, and Theology.
Later, he served as a parish priest in several other cities. These included Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz in el Seibo, and San Juan de la Maguana. Finally, he became the parish priest in La Vega. In La Vega, he started building a new church. The town was so grateful that they named him an "adopted son."
In 1903, he was chosen to represent the Province of La Vega as a deputy. That same year, he traveled to Rome. There, he was named Archbishop of Metymma. He was also chosen to succeed Monsignor Meriño as the Archbishop of Santo Domingo. He officially took over this role on August 20, 1906, after Meriño's death.
His Time in Politics
Adolfo Nouel became the provisional president of the Dominican Republic on November 30, 1912. This happened because the country was going through a civil war. People needed a neutral leader who could bring peace and stability. Nouel was seen as someone trustworthy and respected.
He worked hard to bring peace to the country. On April 13, 1913, he resigned from his position. He felt that he had achieved his goal of bringing peace.
Later, the United States invaded the Dominican Republic. This happened while Nouel was in Rome for health reasons. When he returned to Santo Domingo in 1920, he wrote a letter to the American Ambassador. In this letter, he protested against the American intervention in his country.
His Writings
Adolfo Nouel also had a passion for writing. However, most of his literary work was not published during his lifetime. Typed copies of his writings are kept at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo.
He was also in charge of editing a book written by his father. This book was called Historia Eclesiastica de la Arquidiocesis de Santo Domingo. At the time of his death in 1937, he was working on reviewing historical documents from el Archivo de Indias.
