Adrian Clive Hayday (born April 1956) is a British scientist. He studies the body's defense system, called immunology. He is a professor at King's College London. He also leads a research group at the Francis Crick Institute in the UK.

Learning and Studies

Adrian Hayday went to Queens' College, Cambridge University. There, he earned a degree in natural sciences in 1978. He then completed his PhD in molecular virology in 1982. This research was done at Imperial College London.

His Work and Discoveries

In 1982, Adrian Hayday started studying immunology. He worked at MIT as a researcher. He found out how certain genes cause a type of cancer called Burkitt's lymphoma.

Later, he discovered special cells called gamma-delta T cells. These cells are a key part of our immune system. They are different from other T cells. Gamma-delta T cells often watch over the body's surfaces. They protect us from problems like infections or even cancer.

Professor Hayday's work shows how these cells react quickly. This helps protect us from diseases. Scientists are now using his discoveries to create new ways to fight cancer. This is called immunotherapy.

Awards and Special Recognition

Adrian Hayday has received many awards. One top award is the William Clyde DeVane Medal from Yale University. This is Yale's highest honor for teaching and research.

He was also chosen to lead the British Society for Immunology. This was from 2005 to 2009. He has given advice to many important science groups. These include the Pasteur Institute and Cancer Research UK. In 2016, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). This is a very high honor for scientists in the UK. He is also an honorary member of the British Society for Immunology.
