Adrien Agreste is a main character in the animated TV show Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. He is a teenage student and a model in Paris, France. Adrien is the son of a famous fashion designer, Gabriel Agreste.
Adrien was homeschooled for most of his life. One day, he helped an old man named Master Fu. Master Fu is the guardian of special magical jewels called Miraculouses. Because Adrien was so kind, Master Fu chose him to be a superhero.
Adrien received the Cat Miraculous, a magical ring. When he wears it, he can transform into his superhero self, Cat Noir. His partner is Ladybug, and he quickly develops feelings for her. He doesn't know that Ladybug is actually his classmate, Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
Cat Noir and Ladybug work together to protect Paris from the villain Hawk Moth. Each Miraculous comes with a small magical creature called a kwami. Adrien's kwami is Plagg, who looks like a black cat. As Cat Noir, Adrien's special power is destruction.
Adrien appears in many Miraculous stories, including the main TV series, comic books, and mobile games.

Creating Adrien Agreste
How Adrien and Cat Noir Were Made

Thomas Astruc, the creator of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, wanted Adrien Agreste to be like a "modern" Prince Charming. He wanted Adrien to have many good qualities and be someone everyone would like. Astruc described Adrien as "handsome, smart, brave, but also very sensitive." He hoped Adrien would inspire people around the world.
Since Ladybug's power is linked to good luck, Astruc decided her partner should have powers related to bad luck. This led him to think of a black cat, which became Cat Noir. The character of Cat Noir (which means "Black Cat" in French) was also a tribute to Catwoman.
Originally, Cat Noir's civilian identity was a character named Félix. Félix was supposed to be a bit cold and snobby. However, the creators felt this wouldn't work well for long-term stories. So, Félix was replaced with Adrien, who is a kinder character. Astruc said that Cat Noir is one of the two most powerful teenagers, along with Ladybug, because he has the power of destruction.
The idea of a black cat and a ladybug duo was inspired by one of Astruc's past relationships. He found it fun to manage the romantic situations between Cat Noir and Ladybug, and their civilian selves. Astruc noted that superhero pairs like them are rare on TV. He said that a romantic relationship between Adrien and Marinette would be tricky as long as there was a villain.
Jeremy Zag, the producer of Miraculous, said that the love story between Adrien, Marinette, and their superhero identities is a key part of the show. Sébastien Thibaudeau, a writer for Miraculous, mentioned that Adrien's difficult life often makes him feel emotional. He added that Cat Noir brings humor to the story, unlike the more serious Ladybug. Thibaudeau said that Adrien can truly express himself when he is transformed into Cat Noir.
Fred Lenoir, another writer, said that the relationship between Adrien and Marinette, both as civilians and superheroes, is central to the story. Nicole D'Andria, who helped write a Miraculous comic book, called Cat Noir a "fantastic" character. Giulia Adragna, who created an Italian Miraculous comic book series, said Adrien is her favorite character. She liked that even though Adrien comes from a rich family and is a model, he is shown as innocent, caring, and kind.
Who Voices Adrien?
Bryce Papenbrook is the voice of Adrien in the English version of Miraculous. Papenbrook enjoys playing Cat Noir and says the show is "great" with "fun animation and a lot of puns." He believes the English version has the most puns, and he loves making "cheesy puns" as Cat Noir.
Papenbrook is very excited about the show's success, including winning a Teen Choice Award. He looks forward to seeing new villains in future seasons.
When they were choosing voices for the show, many actors tried out for Adrien's role. Ezra Weisz, the voice director, wanted Adrien's voice to sound young. As Cat Noir, he wanted the voice to show confidence without being too proud. Weisz felt Bryce Papenbrook was perfect for the role because his voice sounded "the right age" and he had "the right acting abilities."
Jared Wolfson, an executive producer, described Papenbrook as "very happy" and "energetic." He said Papenbrook "loves what he does" and is "very passionate" about voicing Adrien and Cat Noir. Cristina Vee, who voices Marinette, called Papenbrook "one of the nicest people" and a "really talented actor."
In the French version of the show, Benjamin Bollen voices Adrien. Thomas Astruc praised the entire French voice cast, including Bollen.
Adrien's Adventures
In the Main TV Series
Adrien is the main male character in the Miraculous series. He is a French teenager who lives in Paris with his wealthy family. His mother, Emilie, has disappeared, and his father, Gabriel Agreste, is a famous fashion designer. Adrien works as a model for his father, which makes him popular.
Adrien is looked after by his father's assistant, Nathalie Sancoeur, and he also has a bodyguard. He has an aunt named Amélie and a cousin named Félix.
Even though he was homeschooled, Adrien decided to go to a regular school to make friends. On his first day, he helped an old man, Master Fu. This was a test, and because of Adrien's kindness, Master Fu gave him the Cat Miraculous ring. When Adrien opened the box, a black cat-like creature named Plagg appeared. Plagg is a kwami, a magical being that helps him transform.
Adrien quickly transformed into Cat Noir. His superhero suit looks like a black cat. He soon met his new partner, Ladybug, and fell in love with her. He didn't know that Ladybug was actually Marinette, his classmate who has a crush on him. As Cat Noir, Adrien is more outgoing and playful, often making cat-themed puns.
Cat Noir and Ladybug's job is to protect Paris from Hawk Moth. Hawk Moth turns people into supervillains and wants to steal their Miraculouses. Unknown to Adrien, Hawk Moth is actually his own father. Cat Noir's special power is "Cataclysm," which can destroy things. His weapon is an extendable staff.
Adrien has a distant relationship with his father. He often tries to meet his father's expectations, which makes it hard for him to express himself. He has a changing but caring relationship with Plagg. Adrien gets along well with his classmates, especially his best friend, Nino Lahiffe. He is also close with Kagami Tsurugi, a friend from his fencing lessons. Adrien has a childhood friend, Chloé Bourgeois, but he doesn't like her rude behavior.
