Adrienne Adams (born February 10, 1906 – died December 3, 2002) was a talented American artist. She was famous for illustrating children's books. She also wrote some children's books herself!

Adrienne Adams won several important awards for her work. These included two Caldecott Honors in 1960 and 1962. These honors are given to artists for outstanding picture books for children. In 1973, she received the Rutgers Award for her amazing contributions to children's literature. She also won the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion in 1977.

Adrienne Adams was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She grew up in Oklahoma. She went to Stephens College and later the University of Missouri.

In 1929, she moved to New York City. There, she studied at the American School of Design. For many years, she worked as a freelance designer. She created displays, murals, textiles, and even greeting cards.

Starting Her Career

In 1935, Adrienne married John Lonzo Anderson, who was also a children's book writer. Her career as an illustrator began in 1942. She illustrated one of her husband's books called Bag of Smoke.

By 1952, she became a full-time illustrator. She illustrated more than 30 books! These included books by famous authors like Rumer Godden and Aileen Fisher. She also illustrated classic fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm.

Besides illustrating, Adrienne Adams wrote six children's books of her own. She also illustrated these books herself. Her work brought many stories to life for young readers.
