Afon Dringarth facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Afon Dringarth (also called Tringarth) is a lovely river in Powys, Wales. It flows entirely within the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. This river starts from small streams high up in the hills. These streams gather water from the eastern side of Fan Dringarth, the southern side of Craig Cerrig-gleisiad, and the western side of Fan Fawr.

The Afon Dringarth flows for about 6 kilometers (or 3.5 miles) towards the south-southwest. It eventually meets another river called the Afon Llia. This meeting point is about one mile north of the village of Ystradfellte. After joining the Afon Llia, the river continues south and is then known as the Afon Mellte. The name "Dringarth" might even come from the nearby hill, Fan Dringarth.

What is the Afon Dringarth?

The Afon Dringarth is a natural waterway. It plays an important role in the local environment. It helps to shape the landscape of the Brecon Beacons.

Where Does the Afon Dringarth Flow?

The river flows over land made of Old Red Sandstone. This type of rock formed a very long time ago, during a period called the Devonian period. Scientists can tell how old the rocks are by studying them.

How Did Ice Ages Affect the River?

You can find areas of "glacial till" near the river. Glacial till is a mix of rocks and soil left behind by glaciers. This shows that huge sheets of ice covered the area during past ice ages. These glaciers carved out valleys and shaped the land we see today.

What is the Ystradfellte Reservoir?

In the early 1900s, a dam was built across the Afon Dringarth. This dam created the Ystradfellte Reservoir. Reservoirs are like big lakes that store water. This water can then be used for drinking or other purposes.
