History of Ystradfellte
Ystradfellte is known in history for a special event. In 1316, a Welsh nobleman and rebel leader named Llywelyn Bren surrendered here. He agreed to give himself up if his men were kept safe. Sadly, Llywelyn was later put to death in 1318 in Cardiff.
The village got its main electricity supply in 1960. It was one of the last places in England and Wales to get wired up! Some homes in the nearby Nedd Fechan valley had to wait even longer, until December 2005, for their electricity connection.
Things to See and Do
Ystradfellte is a very popular place for tourists. People love to visit for hillwalking, seeing amazing waterfalls, and exploring caves along the nearby rivers.
The village has a local pub called the New Inn. It offers camping spots for visitors who want to stay close to nature. There's also a caving club here called Croydon Caving Club.
Exploring Caves
The area around Ystradfellte is famous for its many caves and special rock formations called karst scenery. This makes caving a very popular activity. Some of the well-known caves near the village include:
- Porth yr Ogof: This cave has the biggest entrance in all of Wales! The River Mellte actually flows right into it.
- Little Neath River Cave.
Waterfall Country
The area is also known as "Waterfall Country" because of its many beautiful waterfalls. A very popular attraction is the Waterfalls Walk. This is an easy walk along the Afon Mellte river.
You'll see two main waterfalls on the Afon Mellte:
- Sgwd Clun-gwyn
- Sgwd Isaf Clun-gwyn
The walk then leads to Sgwd yr Eira on the Afon Hepste. What's really cool about Sgwd yr Eira is that the footpath goes right behind the waterfall!
