The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is a special mission by the African Union. It helps Somalia become more stable and secure. ATMIS is slowly reducing its presence. This allows Somali forces to take over security duties.

ATMIS started on April 1, 2022. It took over from an older mission called the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM). Troops from several East African countries are part of ATMIS. These countries include Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda.

The mission is planned to end by December 31, 2024. After this, the Somali National Armed Forces will be fully in charge of their country's safety. ATMIS is expected to change into a new mission called the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in early 2025. However, money problems and disagreements between Somalia and Ethiopia might cause delays.

What is the ATMIS Mission?

The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia began on April 1, 2022. It was formed right after the AMISOM mission ended. The main goal of ATMIS is to help Somalia take control of its own security. This means training and supporting the Somali government and its military.

Helping Somalia Take Charge

ATMIS works to make sure Somalia's own security forces are ready. They want these forces to handle all security tasks by the end of 2024. This plan is called the Somalia Transition Plan. The first group of ATMIS troops started to leave in December 2022. This was a step towards the mission's end. In May 2024, Somalia asked the United Nations to help end this peacekeeping operation.

Training and Support

On March 2, 2023, Hillary Sao Kanu became the Commissioner of Police for ATMIS. Her job is to help keep the region safe and stable. She also helps train the local police force in Somalia. This training includes teaching them how to maintain order and providing them with necessary equipment.
