Agency is a small city located in Wapello County, Iowa, in the United States. In 2020, about 620 people lived there. This city is famous for being an old trading post for Native Americans and the burial place of a respected leader, Chief Wapello.
History of Agency, Iowa
Agency began as an 'Indian agency' in 1838. This was a place where government officials worked with local Native American tribes. The agency operated until the tribes moved to Kansas. The town of Agency was officially started in 1843. It became an incorporated city in 1859.
Chief Wapello's Resting Place
Agency is the burial site of Chief Wapello. He was a very important leader, second in command of the Sac and Fox tribe. Chief Wapello is buried next to his good friend, General Joseph M. Street, and his family.
2001 Tornado Event
On April 11, 2001, a strong tornado hit Agency. This tornado was an F2, which means it was quite powerful. It destroyed or damaged many buildings in the city. Sadly, two people lost their lives, and three others were hurt during this event.
