The Agnes River is a river in Ontario, Canada. It is part of the large Lake Huron drainage basin. This means all the water from the Agnes River eventually flows into Lake Huron. The river is located in an area called Unorganized Sudbury District in Northeastern Ontario.
About the Agnes River
The Agnes River starts at a place called Sinaminda Lake. From there, it flows towards the southeast. The river ends when it flows into the Spanish River. The Spanish River then carries the water to the North Channel, which is part of Lake Huron.
Water Flow and Power
The water flowing out of Sinaminda Lake is controlled by the Sinaminda Dam. This dam is owned by a company called Domtar. The dam helps to manage how much water flows from the lake.
The controlled water flow is important for hydroelectric power plants. These plants use the force of moving water to create electricity. Companies like Vale Inco use this regulated water flow further downstream on the Spanish River to generate power.
River Features
Where the Agnes River meets the Spanish River, there is a special landform. It is a delta that was shaped by glaciers long ago. A delta is a triangular piece of land formed when a river deposits sediment as it enters a larger body of water.
Old Forests
In the area where the Agnes River flows, there is a special forest. It is called the Agnes River Old Pine. This forest is made up of old-growth forest trees. Old-growth forests are very old forests that have not been disturbed much by humans. They often have very large, tall trees and a lot of different plants and animals.
Tributaries
A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger river. The Agnes River has one main tributary:
- Shakwa River (this river flows into the Agnes River from the right side)
