Who Was Agustín Millares Sall?
Agustín Millares Sall was born on June 30, 1917. His birthplace was Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain. He grew up in a very artistic family.
Early Life and Family
Agustín's father, Juan Millares Carlo, was also a poet. His brothers were painters Manolo Millares and Eduardo Millares. His brother Jose Maris Millares Sall was a poet too. Another brother, Toyoto Millares, played the timple, a small guitar. His sister, Jane Millares Sall, was also a painter. This creative family helped Agustín become interested in art and culture from a young age.
Education and War
When Agustín was in high school, he had a writer named Agustin Espinosa as his teacher. Agustín Espinosa inspired him to study Philosophy and literature in Madrid. However, a big conflict called the Spanish Civil War started. Because of the war, Agustín could not finish his studies.
His Path as a Poet
In the 1930s, Agustín became part of a movement that wanted to improve society. He taught himself how to write poetry. In 1929, he published his first poem, El barco muerto. It appeared in a newspaper called La Voz Obrera. In 1932, Agustín joined the Communist Party of Spain. This was a political group with certain ideas about how society should be run.
His political involvement caused problems during the Spanish Civil War. He was held in a special camp. In 1938, he was forced to leave his home and go to Lanzarote.
Later Life and Work
In 1941, Agustín started working for a shipping company. It was called Compañía Transmediterránea. He worked there until he retired. At the company, he met Juan Manuel Trujillo. Juan Manuel Trujillo helped Agustín publish his first book of poetry.
