Early Life and Start in Politics
Ahmed Patel was born on August 21, 1949, in a small village called Piraman in Gujarat, India. His family were farmers. His father, Mohammed Ishaakji Patel, was a social worker. Ahmed Patel joined the Indian Youth Congress, which is the youth group of the Indian National Congress party.
He began his political journey by taking part in local elections in the Bharuch District of Gujarat in 1976.
Political Journey
In 1977, the Prime Minister of India at the time, Indira Gandhi, chose Ahmed Patel to run for elections to the Lok Sabha from Bharuch. He won this election and also won again in 1980 and 1984. This meant he represented Bharuch in Parliament until 1989.
In 1985, he became the Parliamentary Secretary to the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. This role meant he helped the Prime Minister with parliamentary work. In 1987, he helped create the Narmada Management Authority. This group was set up to keep an eye on the Sardar Sarovar Project, a big dam project. He also helped finish the construction of the Jawahar Bhavan building in 1988.
Ahmed Patel was elected to the Rajya Sabha for his fourth term in 2005. Even though he was seen as a key advisor to Sonia Gandhi, he chose not to join the government directly between 2004 and 2014.
He was one of only two Muslim politicians from Gujarat to be elected as a Lok Sabha MP. He replaced Motilal Vora as the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee in 2018.
His last election to the Rajya Sabha in 2017 was very competitive. This was unusual, as most Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat before this had been unopposed.
What He Achieved
During the UPA Government (from 2004 to 2014), Ahmed Patel was known for solving problems and helping the government and party work together.
In 2005, he helped make sure that Bharuch was one of the first areas to get electricity under a new government plan. He also helped build the Sardar Patel bridge. This bridge helps reduce traffic between the cities of Bharuch and Ankleshwar. He is also credited with helping to set up the Sardar Patel Hospital & Heart Institute in Ankleshwar.
Because he was very close to the Congress party president, Sonia Gandhi, he was considered a very powerful figure within the party.
Personal Life
Ahmed Patel married Memoona Ahmed Patel in 1976. They had two children, a daughter and a son. He was known for being a private person and did not often speak to the media.
Death
Ahmed Patel passed away on November 25, 2020. He died because his organs failed after he got COVID-19. He had been in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Medanta Hospital. His body was taken to his family village in Gujarat, where he was buried.
