Ahmed Vefik Pasha (Ottoman Turkish: احمد وفیق پاشا) was an important figure in the Ottoman Empire. He lived from July 3, 1823, to April 2, 1891. He was a statesman, a diplomat, a scholar, a playwright, and a translator. He lived during a time of big changes called the Tanzimat and First Constitutional Era.
Ahmed Vefik Pasha held many high-ranking government jobs. He even led the first Ottoman Parliament in 1877. He also served as Grand Vizier twice. The Grand Vizier was like the chief minister or prime minister of the Ottoman Empire. He also started the first Ottoman theatre. He brought the first Western-style plays to the city of Bursa. He translated many famous plays by the French writer Molière. A Turkish postcard stamp from 1966 even showed his picture.
Biography
Ahmed Vefik Pasha was born in Constantinople (now Istanbul). His family had Greek ancestors who had become Muslim. He began his education in Constantinople in 1831. Later, he moved to Paris with his family. He graduated from Saint Louis College there.
Ahmed Vefik Pasha became the Minister of Education for the Ottoman Empire. He also served as Grand Vizier two times. When he was the governor of Bursa, he built a theatre in the city. In 1860, he became the Ottoman ambassador to France. He wrote the first Turkish dictionary. He is also seen as one of the first people to promote Pan-Turkism, which is an idea about Turkish identity and unity.
