Growing Up
Ahtyba Rubin was born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He went to Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida, and graduated in 2004. Interestingly, two other famous NFL players, Trent Richardson and Emmitt Smith, also went to the same high school!
After high school, Ahtyba attended Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. In his first year, he played on the defensive line. But in his second year, he switched to the offensive line. He did very well in this new role, earning special honors for his performance in 2006.
College Football Journey
After community college, Ahtyba was considered a talented player by many universities. He chose to play for Iowa State University over other schools like TCU.
At Iowa State, he switched back to playing on the defensive line. In 2006, his junior year, he started in nine games. He made 34 tackles, which means he stopped the opposing team's ball carrier 34 times. He also had one sack, tackling the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.
In his senior year, Ahtyba played in every game for the Iowa State Cyclones. He continued to play well, making 42 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Professional Career
Joining the NFL
After his strong college career, experts thought Ahtyba Rubin would be a good player in the NFL. He was picked by the Cleveland Browns in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft. This was the 190th player chosen overall in the draft. He officially signed with the Browns on July 22, 2008.
Playing for the Cleveland Browns
In his first two years with the Browns (2008 and 2009), Ahtyba was a backup player for nose tackle Shaun Rogers. A nose tackle is a strong defensive player who lines up directly across from the center of the offense.
In 2009, Shaun Rogers got injured, and Ahtyba stepped up to become the starting nose tackle. He played so well that the Browns decided to make him a permanent starter in 2010. That year was one of his best, with 87 tackles and an interception against the Kansas City Chiefs.
During his seven years with the Cleveland Browns, Ahtyba played in 72 games and started 50 of them. He had a total of 9.0 sacks, 227 tackles, and even caught one interception.
Moving to the Seattle Seahawks
On March 19, 2015, Ahtyba signed a one-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks. He quickly earned a starting spot on their defensive line. In his first season with the Seahawks, he recorded his first sack for the team in Week 4 against the Cincinnati Bengals. Later that year, in Week 11, he made an interception in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, helping his team win.
Because he played so well, the Seahawks signed him to a new three-year contract in March 2016. However, he was released by the Seahawks on September 2, 2017.
Later Career
After leaving the Seahawks, Ahtyba Rubin continued his NFL journey with a few other teams in 2017 and 2018.
- He signed with the Denver Broncos on September 15, 2017, but was released a month later.
- He then joined the Atlanta Falcons on October 19, 2017.
- In 2018, Ahtyba signed with the Oakland Raiders. Unfortunately, he suffered a biceps injury and was placed on injured reserve, which ended his season.
