Trenton Jamond Richardson (born July 10, 1990) is a former professional football player from the United States. He was a running back in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. There, he was recognized as a unanimous All-American and helped his team win two national championships.
Many experts thought Richardson was the best running back coming into the 2012 NFL draft. He was picked third overall by the Cleveland Browns. After being traded to the Indianapolis Colts, his performance dropped. He is sometimes seen as one of the biggest "draft busts" in NFL history. He later played for the Birmingham Iron in the Alliance of American Football in 2019. He led that league with 12 total touchdowns.

Early Life and High School Football
Richardson was born in Pensacola, Florida. He played football at Escambia High School. In his senior year, he ran for 2,100 yards and scored 25 touchdowns. In one game, he rushed for an amazing 419 yards. This performance earned him the first ESPN RISE National Football Player of the Week award.
As a junior, he also had a 400-yard game. He finished that season with 1,390 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was named to the All-State team. In his senior year, he was named Florida Player of the Year.
Track and Field Achievements
Richardson also competed in track & field at Escambia High. In 2008, he won a regional title in the 100-meter dash. He had a personal best time of 10.5 seconds in the 100 meters. He also participated in the long jump event.
College Recruitment
Many people compared Richardson to famous running backs like Emmitt Smith and Earl Campbell. He was considered a top recruit by Rivals.com. He chose to play for the University of Alabama over other big schools.
College Football Career
Richardson received an athletic scholarship to play for the University of Alabama. He played for coach Nick Saban's Alabama Crimson Tide football team from 2009 to 2011.
First Year: 2009 Season
In his first year, Richardson quickly became an important player. He shared playing time with other running backs. In his second game, he rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week twice. He also helped Alabama win the 2010 BCS National Championship against the Texas Longhorns. In that game, he had 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns. For the season, he gained 751 rushing yards and scored eight rushing touchdowns.
Second Year: 2010 Season
Richardson started the first two games of the 2010 season. In the first game, he had 112 total yards and two touchdowns. The next week, he ran for a career-high 144 yards. He also had a game with 101 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. In a big rivalry game against Tennessee, he rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown. He also returned kicks, including one for a touchdown.
Junior Year: 2011 Season
After another star running back left for the NFL, Richardson became the main starter. He had an amazing season, rushing for over 100 yards in nine games. He tied a record with six straight 100-yard rushing games. He scored two or more touchdowns in seven games. He set a new career high with 183 rushing yards and four touchdowns against Ole Miss. In the important Iron Bowl game, he ran for a new career high of 203 yards.
Richardson won the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the best college running back. He finished third in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. He was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year and an All-American. In the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, he rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown. This helped Alabama win its second national championship with him on the team.
For the season, Richardson rushed for 1,679 yards, breaking a school record. He also scored 21 rushing touchdowns, which was an SEC record for a running back. He decided to enter the 2012 NFL draft after this season.
Professional Football Career
Before the 2012 NFL Draft, many experts believed Richardson was the best running back available. He was expected to be picked very early.
Cleveland Browns (2012–2013)
The Cleveland Browns selected Richardson with the third overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. This was a very high pick for a running back. He signed a four-year contract worth $20.4 million.
In his first NFL game, he rushed for 39 yards. The next week, he ran for 109 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a touchdown pass in that game. He was the first Browns rookie to have over 100 rushing yards and score both rushing and receiving touchdowns in the same game. He tied a team rookie record with 9 touchdowns.
Indianapolis Colts (2013–2014)
In September 2013, Richardson was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts needed a running back due to an injury. In his very first carry for the Colts, he scored a touchdown. However, he struggled for most of the season. He was eventually replaced as the main running back.
In 2014, Richardson shared carries with another running back. When that player got injured, Richardson became the lead back again. But later in the season, another player took over as the main running back. Richardson was not active for the Colts' final two playoff games. He was suspended for one game after missing a team meeting. The Colts released him in March 2015.
Oakland Raiders (2015)
In March 2015, Richardson signed a two-year contract with the Oakland Raiders. He missed part of training camp due to illness. The Raiders released him in August 2015.
Baltimore Ravens (2016)
Richardson signed with the Baltimore Ravens in April 2016. However, he was released by the team in August 2016.
Saskatchewan Roughriders (2017)
In 2017, Richardson signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. He played in four games, rushing for 259 yards and two touchdowns. He suffered an ankle injury and missed the playoffs. He was later released by the team in 2018.
Birmingham Iron (2019)
In 2018, Richardson signed with the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). In the first game of the 2019 AAF season, he rushed for 58 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught a pass for 14 yards. He scored at least one rushing touchdown in each of the first eight weeks. The AAF league stopped operations early, so the season ended after eight weeks. Richardson finished as the AAF's most productive player with 12 total touchdowns.
Caudillos de Chihuahua (2021–2022)
On February 11, 2021, Richardson signed with the Caudillos de Chihuahua in a Mexican football league. This was seen as a very big signing for Mexican professional football. He played limited time in his first game in 2022.
Personal Life
Trent Richardson has two daughters and three sons. In 2024, he was hired as the running backs coach for Ramsay High School in Birmingham, Alabama.
