Ajawaan Lake is a beautiful lake located in the northern part of Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan, Canada. It sits within a large boreal forest, which is a type of forest with many evergreen trees. The lake is about 700 meters from Kingsmere Lake.
Ajawaan Lake is famous because it was the home of Grey Owl, a well-known naturalist and conservationist. He lived here from 1932 to 1938. The lake is also home to northern pike and walleye fish. You can also spot beavers living in the area.
Exploring Ajawaan Lake
Ajawaan Lake is a great place to visit. You can reach it by following a 20-kilometer trail. This trail starts from the Kingsmere River. You can also get there by canoe or a small boat. This route involves paddling on the Kingsmere River and Kingsmere Lake.
Grey Owl's Historic Cabins
One of the main attractions at Ajawaan Lake is Grey Owl's cabin. A trail leads 2.75 kilometers around the western edge of the lake to his home. There are actually two cabins on the north shore.
One cabin is right by the water. Beavers had built a lodge partly inside this cabin! Grey Owl was known for his work with beavers. The second cabin is located up a hill behind the first one. This cabin was built for Grey Owl's wife, Anahareo. She preferred not to share her living space with beavers.
Remembering Grey Owl
Near the upper cabin, you can find the graves of Grey Owl, his wife Anahareo, and their daughter Shirley Dawn. There are special signs at the cabin site. These signs help visitors learn more about Grey Owl's life and his important work.
Parks Canada has worked to keep both cabins in good condition. They have restored them several times. The beaver lodge inside the lower cabin is now a partial reconstruction. This helps visitors imagine what it was like when Grey Owl lived there.
