Ajofrín is a small town, also known as a municipality, located in the province of Toledo, in the region of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. In 2008, about 2,328 people lived there. The name Ajofrín comes from an old Arabic word, Al-Ya'rar, which means "the place of the Yafar or Jafar."
A Glimpse into Ajofrín's Past
Ajofrín has a very long history! We know people have lived here since the time of the Roman Empire. This is because old Roman ruins have been found in the area.
During the 1400s, Ajofrín was controlled by the Church of Toledo. At that time, it was called a villa, which meant it was an important town.
Ajofrín also had a copper mine. This mine helped the town grow during the Renaissance, a period of great art and learning. However, the mine was closed in the mid-1700s.
Where Ajofrín Is Located
Ajofrín is situated on a granite plateau, which is like a flat-topped mountain. This area is in the northern part of the Montes de Toledo mountain range.
Ajofrín shares its borders with several other towns. These include Burguillos de Toledo, Nambroca, Chueca, Sonseca, Mazarambroz, and Layos.
What Ajofrín Makes
The main activity in Ajofrín is agriculture, which means farming. A large part of the land, about 60%, is used for growing crops.
Most of this farmland, about 55%, is covered with vineyards, where grapes are grown. The rest of the land is used to grow other crops like sugarbeets, olives, and different types of cereal grains.
