Orgaz and a Famous Painting
Orgaz is connected to a very famous painting. It is called "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz". The artist El Greco painted it. You can see this painting in Toledo, not in Orgaz.
The painting shows a man named Don Gonzalo Ruíz. He was from Toledo and was also the lord of Orgaz. The lords of Orgaz built the town's castle. This happened in the 1300s.
Discovering Arisgotas Village
Arisgotas is a small village near Orgaz. It is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) away. Today, only about 30 people live there. Arisgotas used to be its own town. It joined with Orgaz in the 1800s.
The name "Arisgotas" might come from the word "Goths". We know that the Visigoths lived in this area long ago.
Visigothic History and Art
In the 2000s, a museum opened in Arisgotas. It shows Visigothic art. The museum uses old stone pieces. These pieces came from an archaeological site called Los Hitos. Local villagers used to get stones from Los Hitos.
At Los Hitos, experts found old Visigothic buildings. They found parts of a church. This church was later changed into a mosque. This happened when the Islamic period began in the 700s. The site became a ruin after Alfonso VI of León and Castile took over Toledo. This event is known as the Reconquista.
