Akir (which stands for Always Keep It Real) is an American rapper, songwriter, and activist. He is known for his smart lyrics and songs about important social topics.

Akir's Early Days and Music
Akir started in hip hop on his high school radio station, WNMH, from 1994 to 1996. In 1998, he placed second in a rap competition at Howard University. Akir then focused on making music. He worked with his brother, SouthPaw, to produce a song for Immortal Technique's album Revolutionary Vol. 1.
Akir released his first song, "Best Friend," on a mix CD called The Blockbuster Vol. 1. This was through his own company, One Enterprises.
First Albums and Recognition
In November 2005, Akir and ten other rising rappers formed a group called The Reavers. They released an album called Terror Firma. Soon after, Akir's first solo album, Legacy, came out. It was released by One Enterprises and Viper Records.
After Legacy was released, Akir was featured in popular magazines. These included The Source and XXL magazine. In 2006, Akir also modeled for Mecca 5star clothing.
Touring and Special Projects
Akir has performed in many places around the world. He has done over 10 international tours and more than 15 tours in the US. He has performed over 1000 shows in total. Some big festivals he played at include Coachella, Roskilde in Denmark, and Hip Hop Al Parque in Colombia.
Educational Work
Akir also worked on the Flocabulary project. This project helps students learn through hip hop music. He teamed up with 9th Wonder to turn the story of Romeo and Juliet into a hip hop song for schools. He was also mentioned in their book, The Rappers Handbook.
In 2007, Akir's second album, Legacy, was re-released.
Activism and Community Work
In 2008, Akir became the head of artist relations at the Hip Hop Caucus. This group works to get young people involved in voting. He helped with their "Respect My Vote '08" campaign. Famous people like TI and Pharoahe Monch were also part of this campaign.
Akir also helped young people who were facing challenges. He taught them writing, music production, and recording. He did this through a non-profit group called Art Start. They used a studio donated by famous people like Bruce Willis and Queen Latifah.
Akir is also a member of Rebel Army, a group of hip-hop artists and activists. This group includes Immortal Technique, Poison Pen, and Diabolic.
Recent Releases
In 2009, Akir released a mixtape called The Secret. It was hosted by DJ Static and Statik Selektah. His EP (Extended Play) called FOCUS came out on August 20, 2013. His album The Plan was released on September 24, 2013.
