Akkrum is a lovely village in the Netherlands. It is located in the province of Friesland. You can find it within the municipality of Heerenveen. Akkrum is about 17 kilometers south of the city of Leeuwarden. In 2017, around 3,395 people lived here.
Akkrum's History
Akkrum was first mentioned in the year 1315. It started as a "terp" village. A terp is an artificial mound of earth. People built these mounds to keep their homes safe from floods. Later, Akkrum grew into a "linear settlement." This means it stretched out along a road or river. It became an important local center for the area.
The village really started to grow when a main road was built. This road connected Leeuwarden and Zwolle. A railway line was also built next to Akkrum. These new transport links helped the village expand. In 1840, Akkrum was home to 1,121 people.
Important Buildings in Akkrum
The Dutch Reformed church in Akkrum was built in 1759. It replaced an older church from the Middle Ages. The church tower was added much later, in 1882.
The Mellemolen is a special type of windmill. It was built in 1849. Its job was to drain extra water from a nearby area called the Polslootpolder. In 1972, a big storm knocked the mill over. But it was fixed and restored in 1976. The mill was later moved in 2003 and 2004. It was moved about two kilometers away. This was because it became surrounded by factories. Today, the Mellemolen only works when volunteers operate it.
Before 2014, Akkrum was part of the Boarnsterhim municipality. And before 1984, it was part of Utingeradeel.
