Aknīste is a small town in Latvia. It is located in the Jēkabpils Municipality, in a region called Selonia. The town is close to the border with Lithuania and sits near the Dienvidsusēja river. Before 2009, Aknīste was part of the Jēkabpils District.

History

The name Aknīste was first written down in 1298. For a long time, starting in the 1600s, Aknīste was part of Lithuania. Later, it became part of the Russian Empire.

In 1918, Aknīste was again part of Lithuania. But in 1921, Lithuania traded Aknīste to Latvia for another town called Palanga.

During World War II, when Nazi Germany occupied the Baltic states, Aknīste faced a very sad time. Many Jewish people living in the town were harmed. This happened in July 1941, when local groups working with the occupiers gathered Jewish residents. These people were later killed.

Aknīste officially became a town in 1991.
