Akutan Island facts for kids
Akutan Island is a cool island in Alaska. It's part of the Fox Islands, which are in the eastern Aleutian Islands. This island is located in the Aleutians East Borough.
Geography
Akutan Island is about 18 miles (30 kilometers) long. Its total land area is about 129 square miles (334 square kilometers).
A volcano called Mount Akutan is on the island. It had a big lava eruption in 1979.
In 2010, 1,027 people lived on Akutan Island. All of them lived in the city of Akutan. This city is near the eastern end of the island.
The island also has a special area with lots of heat from underground. This area includes the Akutan Hot Springs. Hot springs are places where warm water comes out of the ground.
History
The name Akutan comes from the Aleut language. Captain Pyotr Krenitsyn and Mikhail Levashev first wrote about this name in 1768. Later, James Cook spelled it "Acootan" in 1785.
Some people think the name comes from the Aleut word "hakuta." This word means "I made a mistake."
A famous Japanese airplane from World War II was found on Akutan Island. It was a Japanese Zero aircraft. The plane crashed there and was later found by the United States military. Because it was found on the island, it became known as the "Akutan Zero."
