Mir Abdus Shukur Al Mahmud (known as Al Mahmud) was a very famous Bangladeshi poet, novelist, and short-story writer. He was born on July 11, 1936, and passed away on February 15, 2019. Many people think he was one of the greatest Bengali poets of the 20th century.
Al Mahmud was special because he often used local ways of speaking in his poems. In the 1950s, he was one of the poets who wrote boldly about important events. He wrote about the Bengali Language Movement, which was about people fighting for their language. He also wrote about freedom and standing up against unfair rules.
Early Life and His Work
Al Mahmud grew up in Morail Village, which is in the Brahmanbaria District of Bangladesh. He spent his childhood and went to school in this village. It was very close to Brahmanbaria town.
Al Mahmud started his career as a journalist, which means he wrote for newspapers. He became widely known after his book Lok Lokantor was published in 1963. After that, he wrote many more important books. These included Kaler Kalosh (1966), Sonali Kabin (1973), and Mayabi Porda Dule Otho (1976).
He also wrote other famous poems like Arobbo Rojonir Rajhash and Nodir Bhitorer Nodi. Besides poetry, he wrote short stories and novels. Some of these are Pankourir Rakta and Upamohadesh. In 1971, he went to India to help gather support for Bangladesh's fight for freedom. After the war, he worked as an assistant editor for a newspaper called The Daily Ganakantha. Later, in 1975, he joined the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. He retired from there in 1993 as a director.
Important Literary Work
One of Al Mahmud's most important books is Shonali Kabin, which came out in 1973. This book is seen as a major milestone in Bengali poetry. It is still very popular and studied today.
